Many of us suffer from acne. This comes in all shapes and sizes. So, what skincare ingredients are out there when we want to fight acne? Also, are there any ingredients for different kinds of acne? Therefore, we will be checking out the best skincare ingredients to solve acne.
So, what are the different forms of acne?
The main types of acne are inflammatory acne and non-inflammatory acne. Inflammatory acne comes from inflamed types of acne such as pimples, pustules, papules, nodules, and cysts. Non-inflammatory acne exists of non-inflamed symptoms such as whiteheads and blackheads (comedones). There are some different types and stages of acne. Each is different in form and shape, and also, in which location of your face they appear. We will be handling the most common types.
This is a lighter form of acne. It mostly appears during puberty and usually disappears after a later age. Mostly, it appears on the forehead, nose, and cheeks. They come in the form of papules. That is a small red bump with a diameter of less than 1 centimeter. So they are usually small and disappear much quicker. The chances of leaving scars are minimum, but there is still a small chance. It really depends on the area of your face. Also, whether you touch a lot of it or apply aggressive ingredients that make it worse.
You can also call this Acne Tarda. Symptoms are usually whiteheads, blackheads, and papules. This one is very similar to comedonal acne. However, this form of acne might have a chance not to disappear after a later age. Especially females, older than 25 or even 30, still struggle with it. Some have said that it disappeared after their pregnancy, but each person is different. So, let’s not get pregnant just find that out, haha! This can also be due to hormonal causes, by fluctuating changes in estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone. We call this hormonal acne.
This is a very severe form of acne. The follicles of the skin are very inflamed leaving it with large nodules filled with dirty fluids. This form of acne has the highest chance of leaving scars. Also, the parts of your body are involved with this particular type. Especially chest, shoulders, and back.
When acne vulgaris or acne conglobata becomes worse all of a sudden, then we can talk about acne fulminant. This is a very rare form of acne and it has the common symptom to just suddenly appear. The swellings get worse and you can even get sick from it, leaving you with a high fever and your joints start to hurt. The actual cause is still a bit unclear because many factors can play a role.
Ok good, so what ingredients can help me with my type of acne?
Now that we have taken a look into the different forms of acne, it will be much easier for you to identify yours. Therefore, we can now take a look at some different types of skincare ingredients that can help you to combat your type of acne problem. I highly suggest that if you suffer from severe types (acne conglobata and acne fulminant), you seek the aid of a professional dermatologist instead of doing topical treatments. So, these ingredients that I will be pointing out are more to treat comedonal acne, acne vulgaris, and acne tarda.
Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA)
AHA works great on your skin’s surface. It is very effective against whiteheads and hormonal acne. It removes dead skin cells and clears out your skin’s surface. Also, pores that are about the be clogged, will be cleared out before a later stage of acne appears. This ingredient is therefore great for both comedonal acne and acne vulgaris.
Beta Hydroxy Acid
BHA has the same type of method as AHA, however, instead of treating the surface of the skin, it treats your pores from inside. If you would like to read more about both AHA and BHA, then make sure to take a look at my post covering all aspects you need to know about these two ingredients.
This ingredient is quite a bit aggressive, so do not apply too much of this ingredient. It works great for inflamed types such as papules and pustules. Also for pimples in where the whitehead won’t appear and stays hardheaded for weeks. Then, this ingredient might be your friend. My advice is also to apply a relieving moisturizer in a gel form to calm your skin at the same time. Benzoyl peroxide did not really work for me, it made my skin are dry all around my papule (but my papule was still there)! However, each person is different, so it may work for you.
Tea Tree Oil
I use this as an alternative for Benzoyl peroxide. You can usually find this type of oil in a usual drugstore. Just make sure you buy the purest form possible. This oil can also be harsh and aggressive so make sure to apply a smaller amount. Tea Tree Oil has the property to reduce redness and irritation and great anti-inflammatory properties. After applying this oil, my papule has significantly reduced or sometimes disappeared after a day or so.
Green tea has wonderful anti-oxidant properties and also works anti-inflammatory. It is a wonderful ingredient to treat papules and pustules.
Also called vitamin B3. Niacinamide is great for treating papules and pustules but can help also treat more severe types. This ingredient helps with building up new skin cells and also has to protect properties against harmful radicals. It also reduces enlarged pores and controls your sebum levels. The less sebum you produce, the less your pores can get clogged!
The retinoids fasten and regulate the removal of access sebum. This makes this ingredient a wonderful weapon against acne. It also makes sure that it clears your skin from dead skin cells, so it also works a bit like an exfoliator. Therefore, this will work great against all kinds of sorts; whiteheads, blackheads, papules, pustules, etc. If you wish to read more about Retinol (also called Vitamin A), then make sure you check out my post where I will be explaining everything about it in detail.
This ingredient is wonderful as a mask. Green clay works best but pink and grey clay are great as well. Clay absorbs sebum and tightens the pores. Therefore, after a few treatments, the pores will appear much smaller.
